OUR PROGRAMS

This is an exciting watershed year for the St Helena Choral Society, and we have you, our ongoing supporters to thank! We are entering our 10th year as a community nonprofit, with a performance history going back  to 1979. Our programs have brought hours of joy to thousands in Napa Valley audiences and taught singers of all ages and abilities love of music, confidence in performing, and the rewards of teamwork through listening and harmonization.

Over  more  than  four  decades, this  vision  has  been  energetically  led  by a  local  hero—our  beloved  musical director, Craig Bond. Since his official school district retirement, “Mr. Bond” never stopped. Instead he redoubled his efforts to bring choral music to an ever-wider array of singers and audiences under the auspices of our Choral Society.

Year after year we have come to you with an annual appeal for support of each season’s programs—to keep ticket prices free or family-friendly, buy music, offer scholarships, and pay for orchestras and soloists (ticket sales and choir dues cover just 42% of our budget)—and every year you’ve come through with your generous gifts.  This year we humbly request anew your financial support for a very special focus on our future: the Craig Bond Legacy Choral Fund.

The Craig Bond Legacy Choral Fund celebrates past accomplishments and honors the leadership of Craig Bond. But this fund goes far beyond making it through one season at a time. We seek your help to build a truly sustainable future for musical education in our community. Over the coming years,  this  fund will finance our ongoing programs and scholarships and allow us to better plan and expand future programming and creative collaborations.

Our SHCS board has set an ambitious target of $200,000. We feel so strongly that this Legacy Fund is critical to our future that we have contributed $20,000 from our own pockets to kick off the fund.  We hope you will join us with your big-hearted donation,  and  tell  your  friends about  this  fundraising  effort too.

ABOUT SHCS

Mr. Craig Bond has been teaching for over thirty-four years and has instructed students from the elementary to high school levels. He has continually encouraged young singers to reach their talents with passion and enthusiasm. In addition to teaching the Jazz Choir, Mr. Bond has formed the St. Helena Choral Society which includes the 45 member St. Helena Children Chorus, the 30 member St. Helena Teen Choir, the 65 member St. Helena Chamber Singers and Orchestra, and the 15 member Jazz @ 7 vocal ensemble comprised of past Jazz Choir singers.

Since 1981, Mr. Bond and his jazz choirs have participated in countless competitions in California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Vancouver B.C., bringing home 26 first place and 5 Gold Medal Sweepstakes awards in total. He has taken his St. Helena High School Jazz Choir to Europe on several previous occasions at the invite of various European countries. It is because of these achievements and awards that the St. Helena Jazz Choir has been invited to perform in Europe and other countries over the years.

ST HELENA CHORAL SOCIETY’S “CRAIG BOND LEGACY CHORAL FUND” FAQS

Q: WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF ST. HELENA CHORAL SOCIETY (SHCS) NONPROFIT?

A: Craig Bond’s been directing local choirs over four decades. SHCS formed under his leadership in 2007, with donations for both our programs and the historic effort to bring a performing arts classroom/theater to the St Helena High campus. We produce and celebrate choral music in our community, contributing to artistic and cultural education for all ages via four fun choral programs.

Q: HOW DOES MUSICAL EDUCATION AND PERFORMANCE BENEFIT THE COMMUNITY?

A: Beyond cultivating an experience of beauty and harmonious teamwork, research shows that music makes you smarter and more integrated! It raises IQ and test scores, and exercises and coordinates more parts of your brain. SHCS students, regardless of age, gain confidence through performance. Our repertoire, spanning centuries of classical, jazz, popular and new local composers, touches and teaches both students and audiences, fostering a larger cultural unity as well as good old home-town pride.

Q: WHAT PROGRAMS DO YOUR DONATIONS MAKE POSSIBLE?

A: Your gifts (about 60% of budget) combine with member-paid tuitions and ticket revenues (40%) to fund Children’s Choir, Teen Choir, Chamber Singers, and Jazz@7 ensemble as both musical education and performance programs. This annual funding has kept us singing so far, but, we’d like to expand our reach to bring music to more children and adults in our community such as “Sing 101” beginner harmonies for adults. As we look to ensure another generation of choral excellence, making the most of those new community assets—the St Helena Performing Arts Center &Rudd Performing Arts Classroom—we must plan for mounting expenses.

Q: THE NUMBER$... WHAT DO THESE PROGRAMS COST?

A: Costs are kept no frills but are ever-rising. We’ve had to table pricey-but-great programs such as Jazz Workshop Weekends with paid educator/performers like the House Jacks. We face a post-Bond future paying more significant stipend for leadership. Costs of recent programs: Rent sheet music for “The Peacemakers” $1,000. Bus rental and entry fees for Music in the Parks $4600. Concert production for hall, orchestra, soloists, etc. for Messiah $16,000. Each Jazz@7 performance production $1500.

Q: HOW CAN I HELP?

A: We hope you’ll consider supporting this legacy fund honoring Craig Bond and bringing music to St Helena! Call to discuss special grants. You may donate securely online or send a check made to SHCS to St Helena Choral Society, Attn Legacy Fund, P.O. Box 164, St Helena, CA 94574

MR. BOND

"He has continually encouraged young singers to reach their talents with passion and enthusiasm"

Craig Bond received his Bachelor of Arts Music and Physical Education from the San Francisco State University, where he majored in piano and voice. As a graduate student he studied choral conducting at Sonoma State University and the Northern Arizona State University. Mr. Bond is a highly respected member of the choral community and is a member of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), the California Music Educators Association (CMEA) and the National Association of Jazz Educators (NAJE). Craig has served as an adjudicator for CMEA Bay Sections Festivals, as well as the CMEA Golden Empire Festival held at the Sacramento State University.

Mr. Bond was the choral director for the St. Helena Unified School District for 33 years prior to his retirement from full time teaching in 2007. During his tenure in the school district he directed a 100 voice 4th & 5th grade chorus, an 80 voice 6th grade chorus, a 100 voice 7th & 8th grade chorus, a 110 voice HS Concert Choir and the 24 member HS Jazz Choir.

All of his groups consistently received Unanimous Superior Ratings at CMEA choral festivals and his jazz choir has received 1st place honors and sweepstakes awards at

almost every vocal jazz festival in

California and the Pacific Northwest.

Join our St. Helena Choral Society's Scholarship Program. Our board feels that it is extremely important for all children/teens and adults who have the desire to be in one of our groups & have passed the audition requirements to NOT be denied this opportunity due to financial hardship.

Since the formation of the choral society in 2007 we have awarded close to $5000 in scholarships. In most cases we reduce the required tuition by 50%. In order to do this we need your help. If you are interested in supporting our scholarship program, please send your donation to: SHCS , PO Box 164, St. Helena, Calif. 94574 and mark on your check that it is for the scholarship program.

We are looking forward to meeting with your candidates.
